Weekend Concert Preview: Top Shows and Free Downloads

Green Day at Lollapalooza 2010 | Stage Dive (tight)

As we wrap up another fantastic week of exploring and celebrating live music, I’m still in awe of what my fellow concert fans accomplished with their amazing Rocktober Challenge. And now, it’s time to see what’s in store for us this weekend with another exciting Friday edition of top shows and free downloads to get your music fix.

Wolfgang’s Vault: Allman Brothers, Johnny Winter, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Cole and Southern Rock

Alright, let’s get started with what’s rocking this weekend at Wolfgang’s Vault. First, this week they’re featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker and more on the Public Playlist.

And if you’re looking for new and classic concerts to enjoy this weekend, you can check out WGV’s Concert Vault for sessions from Allman Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, Paula Cole and other artists..

As an added bonus, I’m excited that we get to continue our Mannish Boy, Johnny Winter and Muddy Waters experiment, because WGV’s is featuring Johnny Winter in their $4 daily deals on full concert downloads.

If you’re wondering, the downloads can be transferred to your iPod, burned to a CD or whatever you wish. And all of the downloads are available in both high-quality 256k mp3 and lossless CD-quality FLAC format. And if you’re looking to go mobile, go check out the WGV iPhone app.

For more info on why I think Wolfgang’s Vault is an awesome site for concert fans, check out our review of WGV and this article about Live Fix and WGV being featured in the Wall Street Journal.

Free Downloads On MOG Music Network

This week our sponsors and partners over at the MOG Music Network have a bunch of new releases from Rihanna, Cee-Lo Green, Bruce Springsteen, Kid Cudi, Wu-Tang, The Tallest Man On Earth, N.E.R.D., Kid Cudi and Cee-Lo Green and others.

Many of those releases have been on my recent favorites list, and I’ve started to wonder what the songs will be like live as the artists get ready for, or continue, their current tours.

You can download or stream all those new releases, and as many other albums as you want, when you sign up for a FREE 14 day trial at MOG.

For a full review that explains why I love MOG, check out this review of their highly addictive music subscription service.

Amazon and iTunes: The Beatles and Christmas

Each week, iTunes releases a free download of the week that you can check out here (iTunes link).  And you probably heard that  the Beatles are now on iTunes.

That said, I took a quick peek to see if they’ve got any live offerings, and noticed they do have their Live at the Coliseum performance in 1964 available among other Beatles singles and full albums (iTunes link).

Amazon also has free downloads available that include studio and live tracks from top artists in rock, rap, pop and folk. And to get you in the holiday spirit they’re offering 25 Days of Free Christmas songs.

What You Missed
In case you’ve missed them, go check out the other free downloads from Girl Talk, Keys N Krates, Pixies and others that we’ve featured previously on Live Fix.

Concert Previews: White Mystery, DJ Shadow, DJ Tiesto, Grinderman

Alight, now for the live shows…

Tonight at the Bottom Lounge, one of our favorite Chicago bands White Mystery is playing with other local rock and DJ acts.

Also tonight, producer and master turntablist DJ Shadow headlines at the Park West. He’s getting ready to release his next album sometime in 2011 soon, so count on him to test out new tracks this evening.

DJ Tiesto will be playing at the UIC Pavilion tomorrow Saturday 11/20 and we’ll keeping an eye on the show to see if there are any more Tiesto Fan Transformations.

I can’t help but looking ahead to next week because on Monday 11/22 Grinderman will be playing the Rivieria Theater. You can check out my review of Grinderman 2 to see why this is one of the shows I’ve been looking forward to all year. And it should be a great one!

As always, be sure to check out the Thrillist widget in the right-side column for other local Chicago shows coming up.

What’s Next…?

That’s it!  We hope you have a great weekend of shows. Let us know how it goes and share your favorite experiences in the comments below.

Stay tuned as we explore house concerts, John Legend and the Roots, a new live music venue at the Academy of Contemporary Art in Oklahoma and more.
