Concert Preview: Is Gayngs Going To Be Just As Good Live?

One of my favorite albums lately has been the debut release from Gayngs called Relayted. And tonight at Metro we’ll see if the new album is just as good live as it has been between my headphones these past few weeks.

Relayted features over 20 artists including Justin Vernon & Mike Noyce (Bon Iver), Zak Coulter & Adam Hurlburt (Solid Gold), Michael Lewis (Happy Apple/Andrew Bird) Ivan Rosebud (The Rosebuds), Brad Cook & Joe Westerlund (Megafaun), Jake Luck (Leisure Birds), to name a few. And the man at the helm of it all is Minnesota musician/producer Ryan Olson.

Relayted has a steady and beautifully subtle slow-burning groove to it. And I’ve loved swimming through its dark, gorgeous and mysterious mix of indie-R&B, folk, pop, hip hop electro beats and soul.

If I were to compare it to something else I heard before, I would say that Relayted recalls elements similar to the sonic love child birthed from the musical DNA of Barry White, Genesis, Kid Cudi, Massive Attack, and then injected with fresh takes on modern melodic and atmospheric indie-rock.

Front to back, Olson and company find the right balance between having fun and enlightening you with romantic wisdom that’s humorous, wry, indigent and even sarcastic at times.

We’re told that during tonight’s Metro show, Olson will be playing with ten of the 24 artists including Justin Vernon from Bon Iver. So we’ll definitely be looking for The Little Things.

I’ve taken a brake from concerts since my Dad passed away in August, so this show has a special feeling of anticipation it because for reasons I don’t quite understand yet, I’ve found a certain level of comfort in Relayted. And I’ll definitely be thinking about some of the emotions I’ve felt these last couple months.

That said, I’m looking forward to seeing if the live version of my favorite Relayted tracks will wrap around my heart, comfort my soul and make me secretly smile ten-fold on the inside, just like the recorded version has thus far.

Live Facebook & Twitter Experiment

To make things fun and to judge the emotional impact of the show, we’ll be doing a Live Fix Twitter Experiment that you can follow along with on our Live Fix Facebook Page and on Twitter via @chriscatania by using the hashtag #gayngsmetro in your tweets.

I hope enjoy these two live videos from recent Gayngs shows. And you can see them perform on Jimmy Fallon on Oct 4th, if you’re into that Late Night stuff.
