How To Rock Record Store Day 2010

It’s officially Record Store Day today! Use this guide to go out and support your local independent record store.

Last year on Record Store Day I picked up a copy of M. Ward’s Hold Time at Kiss the Sky in Geneva, IL, and I marveled for the last 365 days at the art work on the album. And this year I’m looking forward to finding some more great tunes and supporting my local independent record store once again.

There are hundreds of independent stores participating today and many labels are also releasing exclusive music today, including live concert recordings.

Here’s a list of Record Store Day resources so you can head to your local independent record store and get in on the fun today, too.

Two Music Documentaries and One Unlikely Partnership

First, here are two movies (trailers below) that are being released today by MVD Visual as part of Record Store Day. Both DVDs will be offered exclusively to independent record stores for 90 days.

“We Fun: Atlanta GA Inside/Out”

Production Notes: Directed by Matthew Robison (producer, Silver Jew) and produced by Bill Cody (Athens GA Inside Out), “We Fun: Atlanta GA Inside/Out” is a companion piece to cult classic “Athens GA Inside Out”. The film examines the underbelly of the Atlanta music scene and stars Black Lips, Deerhunter, King Khan & the Shrines, Mastodon, the Selmanaires, and the Coathangers.

“I Need That Record! The Death (or Possible Survival) of the Independent Record Store”

Production Notes: Guerilla filmmaker Brendan Toller presents a documentary feature examining why over 3000 independent record stores have closed across the U.S. in the past decade.

Live at Lime

Lastly, today an unlikely and experimental partnership will take place between LimeWire Store, Yep Roc label and Redeye Distribution.

All three have come together to release Live at Lime with The Soundtrack of Our Lives EP via CD on Record Store Day. As noted in the press release I received, “this is the first time any of the Live at Lime digital titles have been made available in physical format. It is being distributed in limited quantities to select participating Record Store Day stores today.”

Now It’s Your Turn

Have fun and go support your local independent record store! And be sure to let me know what you find and how your Record Store Day went.

What are you looking forward to picking up today?
