Was at the first Beatles one. They arrived by helicopter and when they sung, all you could hear where girls screaming. Was in the 5th row but the rows started way far rfrom the stage. We had to stand on our chairs to see. Also went to numerous others: Janis Joplin, Richie Havens, Joan Baez. Can't even remember them all. On a summer night you could drive by even not inside and hear the music.

In those days, there was a contingent of folk singers at the Gate who were popular with the audiences, Theo Bikel, Jo Mapes, Bob Gibson, Hamilton Camp, Josh White, Odetta, The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, Bud and Travis, Judy Collins, Peter Paul and Mary and more. Some of the songs from the Old Town School songbook were taken from the repertoire of these people, but not all. Many performers who came to the Gate visited the School and played there. I met Dawn Greening through Odetta who had come down to see me and brought Dawn with her. Soon after, I began teaching a small class in the Greening living room in Oak Park Illinois and Win Stracke was one of my students. He and I talked and this was the foundation for the School. Many of the School students attended the performances at the Gate. It is interesting to note that the first performer at the Gate of Horn was folksinger Paul Clayton who accompanied himself on the dulcimer.
